4 Backyard Projects You Can Knock Out in a Weekend

June 2, 2025

Looking to knock out a backyard project this weekend? Whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or just getting started, there are a handful of jobs you can do in just a couple of days that can make a big difference around your home.

The key to getting any project done right and efficiently is having the know-how and the right tools for the job. In this blog, we’ll cover five easy projects you can do this weekend and what you’ll need to get them done.

1. Revitalize Your Deck or Patio

By the time summer hits North Carolina, it usually means layers of pollen, grime, and mildew. The fastest and easiest way to bring your space back to life is by pressure washing it. All you’ll need is a pressure washer, which can be rented for around $40–$70 . Start by clearing the area and spraying down the surface. Be sure to keep the nozzle moving and avoid spraying too closely, as it could cause damage. You’ll be surprised how easily all those years of dirt and grime get washed away. Once it’s clean, you can seal or stain your deck if needed. Plan for the wash to take a day, and let it dry the next day. It’s a great way to make your deck or patio look brand new.

2. Pour a Small Concrete Patio or Slab

If you’ve been wanting a nice, established space to hang out, grill, or even add storage or a shed, pouring a slab is a great way to better utilize your outdoor space—and it can be done in a weekend.

Before you begin, be sure to check your local laws as some patios or similar structures may require a permit.

To start, you’ll need a concrete mixer and a plate compactor or hand tamper for prepping the base. Start by marking and digging out the area, then add a layer of gravel and compact it. Next, set up wood forms around the edges of the slab and use your mixer to mix and pour the concrete. Once it’s poured, screed the top smooth with a 2x4 and finish with a float or broom texture. Let it cure for a day or so—and now you’ve got a versatile slab you can use however you like.

3. Prep and Plant a Garden

Whether you’re planting vegetables, herbs, or flowers, prepping a garden bed only takes a couple of days and can provide your family with food and fun for years to come. To get started, mow the area low, clear any debris, and use a rototiller or a spading fork to break up compacted soil and mix in compost or fertilizer. Once that’s done, rake the bed flat, frame it with rot-resistant cedar, redwood, or stones—or leave it as is. It’s a simple way to boost your yard’s appeal and productivity.

4. Trim or Remove Overgrown Trees and Brush

It might not seem like much fun, but removing overgrown brush, trees, and branches can completely transform your yard and improve your curb appeal. You can make a lot of progress in just a few hours, especially if you have the right gear for the job. Using a chainsaw and proper PPE, get rid of any brush that’s taken over your space. And with all this new room, you might even consider tackling one of the other projects on this list.
